Dental Bridges Q & A

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is a dental device made of titanium and porcelain that’s used to replace missing teeth. When you lose a tooth or have one extracted, a bridge closes the gap between the surrounding teeth. Most bridges are made with artificial teeth and crowns.

The bridge is affixed to natural teeth, which serve as abutments for the device. Most bridges are cemented permanently in place, though some are designed to be removable.

Bridges restore bite and function to your teeth and do the critical job of helping your jaw and bone maintain structure and support for your mouth.

Who needs a dental bridge?

Anyone with missing teeth is a candidate for a dental bridge. Bridges work best when there are only one or two, and possibly three, missing teeth. If more teeth are missing, you may do better with dentures or implants.

As with all cosmetic procedures, Dr. Salha examines your mouth thoroughly to check for signs of decay or gum disease. Any issues need to be addressed before the placement of your new dental bridge.

What happens during a bridge placement appointment?

First, Dr. Salha meticulously sands off a small layer of enamel on the teeth that serve as the abutments. That helps the bridge adhere properly.

Next, he makes an impression of the area where the bridge goes. In the lab, a custom cosmetic dental bridge is made to fit perfectly and snuggly where your tooth used to be.

You’ll go home with a temporary bridge and crowns until the permanent device is ready. When you return in a week or two, Dr. Salha uses dental cement to place the bridge in position permanently.

Is there any downtime required for a bridge placement?

No. Your gums may be tender and sore for a day or two after Dr. Salha installs your bridge, but the procedure isn’t painful and requires no downtime. You can return to normal activities on the same day.

If you’re missing one or more teeth and feel self-conscious when you smile, a dental bridge can restore your confidence. Count on Houston Dental Care for superior cosmetic and restorative dentistry. Call today or book an appointment online.
